2'-Deoxy-2'-fluorocytidine is a nucleoside analogue that inhibits the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase. This prevents the production of tetrahydrofolic acid, which is necessary for the synthesis of purines and pyrimidines. 2'-Deoxy-2'-fluorocytidine has been shown to be active against both HIV and HBV infections in vitro and in vivo. It has also been shown to inhibit the growth of several viruses, including poliovirus, herpes simplex virus, vesicular stomatitis virus, and influenza A virus. 2'-Deoxy-2'-fluorocytidine has also been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties in mice with inflammatory bowel disease.
